Invasive Species
As the threat of invasive species, especially the zebra mussel, increases, lake residents need to be even more conscientious about keeping track of their lake structures and watercraft. It is vital that watercraft, swimming rafts, docks, lifts, boats, personal watercraft and any other structures or craft be routinely inspected and cleaned to avoid introducing any type of invasive species — plant or living organism – into a body of water. Be especially diligent when purchasing docks, lifts, etc. which have been in other bodies of water, or when using your watercraft on another lake, stream, river, etc.
There is a wealth of information concerning invasive species, including identification and prevention, available. See our Links to find numerous articles on this very important topic.
Spraying
LLVLA in the past has lined up aerial spraying to eliminate tent caterpillars. LLVLA will no longer be coordinating spraying. It would require 100% Long Lake property owner participation in order to hire a company to spray. That is not possible as not everyone is a member of the lake association and even many members of the lake association have not participated in spraying.
Fish Stocking
The DNR stocks Long Lake each even numbered year in September or October. For two years LLVLA has been stocking fingerlings in odd numbered years.
All sizes of walleye fingerlings are priced the same per pound. What varies is the average number of fish based on size per pound.
- 4 – 6 inch size average 30 fish per lb.
- 5 – 7 inch size average 22 fish per lb.
- 6 – 8 inch size average 11 fish per lb.
The best survival rate of stocked fish depends on the predator fish in the lake and number and type, such as bass or northern.
LLVLA will continue to perform supplemental stocking in odd years when not stocked by the DNR. The 1st stocking was done Oct 2021 with 402 pounds of walleye fingerlings. Cost was $7,225 with the Board contributing $5,000 and $2,225 of private donations received. In 2022 the DNR stocked 6,000 fingerlings and 629 yearlings. In Oct 2023 LLVLA performed a 2nd stocking for 6,692 fingerlings. $1,890 was funded from private donations and the Board contributed the balance. LLVLA stocking is performed at Sunset Bay Resort. DNR stocking is done at the public access. Future stocking will continue in off years. The number of fish we stock depends on donations/money raised. Looking for additional ideas to fund so that we can increase the amounts stocked. Send donations to the LLVLA P.O. Box 43 Vergas, MN 56587 or contact your Beach Captain or Board member.
Adopt-A-Highway
The lake association became involved in the Minnesota Adopt-a-Highway program in 2011. We are responsible for a portion of Otter Tail Highway 60, which connects U.S. Highway 10 with the city of Vergas and runs along the north side of Long Lake. Members of the association inspect and clean the area at least twice a year, spring and fall. Interested members are welcome to help with this project. Contact an association officer for more information.
